Advancedsettings.xml - unlimited cache size for buffer

Postby Zpanderson » Sat Jan 14, 2012 12:49 am

To cut down on confusion and questions regarding the advancedsettings.xml file here is an overview.

First create a new file and name it advancedsettings.xml with the following contents:

Code: Select all
<advancedsettings>
  <network>
    <cachemembuffersize>0</cachemembuffersize>
  </network>
</advancedsettings>

Then place this file in the following directory (depending on your platform).

    Windows XP: Documents and Settings\<your_user_name>\Application Data\XBMC\userdata\
    Vista/Windows 7: Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\userdata\
    Mac OS X: /Users/<your_user_name>/Library/Application Support/XBMC/userdata/
    iOS: /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata/
    Linux: $HOME/.xbmc/userdata/

Thank you for the clarification. My question was what will be the effect of placing the advancedsettings.xml with the above content [<cachemembuffersize>0</cachemembuffersize> ] on ATV1 ?

(cachemembuffersize>0< means unlimited cache size for buffering )

I am also interested in knowing the impact of this setting on ATV1.

I've created the advancedsettings.xml file and ssh'd it into the /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata/ directory then rebooted ATV2. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have helped with playing 2Shared files: "Working" appears in bottom right corner, along with the spinning wheel for a few seconds but the file doesn't play.
Thank heavens for the brilliant Fasspass T3 add-on published in another XBMC HUB.

This file has no effect on how fast the stream plays. All this does is remove the limit on how far xbmc reads ahead and caches *IF* you are downloading the stream faster than you can play it back. This is EXACTLY the same as watching Youtube in your browser. If the little red bar hasn't reached the point you're trying to play, it has to stop and buffer. 2Shared just had the load on their servers increase 10x literally overnight as they took on ALL of the Icefilms users. They'll have to buy more servers and more capacity. That isn't cheap and takes some time.

I did this recently, and seemed to help with IF.

However I've just added Navi-X , and am now getting the same cache full before buffering complete error!?

That just means that your cache wasn't big enough to buffer the whole thing. XBMC takes 3mb of RAM for every mb buffered. Even though the setting is "unlimited," you're still limited by RAM
